Six Flags Magic Mountain is probably one of the most well-known amusements parks in the country, maybe even the world. It opened in 1971 and was privately owned until Six Flags bought the park in 1979. Magic Mountain is the only Six Flags park that stays open all year ‘round.
Magic Mountain became famous for its cutting edge roller coasters, and several of the coasters at the park are in the record books. In fact, Magic Mountain held the record for most roller coasters in one park when Tatsu opened in 2006, giving them a total of 17 coasters. Unfortunately, Magic Mountain recently closed two of its coasters, Psyclone and Flashback, and gave up the “most coaster” title to Cedar Point, another coaster-crazy park in Sandusky, Ohio.
In keeping with their tradition for coaster innovation, Magic Mountain opened X, the first four-dimensional coaster in the world, in 2002, and this year the already over-the-top thrill ride got a $10 million transformation. X is jumping dimensions this spring and becoming X2.
X2 flies 20 stories into the sky and reaches speeds of up to 76 mph. The trains have been totally redesigned to resemble wings. Now riders will be up against full 360-degree seat rotations and face-first, head-on drops in seats that extend off the track and move independently of the wing-shaped trains. They have also added state-of-the-art audio enhancements, light shows that change with every ride and special effects like fog, fire and blinding wind. The totally transformed X2 opens to guests on May 24.
The major enhancements to the X coaster come on the heels of Tatsu’s opening in 2006. Tatsu holds the record as the fastest, longest and tallest flying roller coaster in the entire world.
Magic Mountain is home to another record-breaker, The Riddler, which is the fastest and tallest stand-up coaster in the world. The Goliath roller coaster is also an impressive specimen. At 255-feet tall, Goliath soars up 26 stories, rockets riders up to 85 mph, and has a near vertical first drop of 61 degrees.
Those little ones who aren’t quite ready for the big kid rides at Magic Mountain will have a thrill of their own at the opening of Thomas Town this spring. The tiny tykes will love taking a ride on their favorite choo-choo, Thomas the Tank Engine.
A popular summertime special at Magic Mountain is the Sunday Rocks Concert Series. So far, they have announced two scheduled performances for this year: Menudo on July 13, and Raven Symone on August 10. The Sunday Rocks concerts are free with park admission or a season pass.
