Six Flags Discovery Kingdom, in Vallejo, California, is in a league of its own as the only animal park – amusement park – marine park combination on the planet. If you’re looking for a full day of fun, you can’t beat the variety offered up at Six Flags Discovery Kingdom.
Discovery Kingdom first opened in 1968, as Marine World, in Redwood City, California. High property values in the 80s forced the park to relocate to Vallejo where they underwent a few name changes:
- The New Marine World Theme Park – 1998
- Six Flags Marine World – 1999
- And finally Six Flags Discovery Kingdom in January 2007.
With its new name and re-branding last year, the park is now divided into three distinct areas: Land, Sky and Sea.
The Land features animal attractions and interactions with unique creatures like
anteaters, macaws and porcupines. Swing by the Animal Outpost early in the day, then explore further and seek out Discovery Kingdom’s animal superstars Taj the elephant and Okin, a rare white Bengal tiger who loves to swim and dive.
In the Sea, you will find an awesome assortment of marine mammals and sea life. Make sure you stop by the Dolphin Discovery area, where you can meet Mavrick, an Atlantic bottle-nosed dolphin born in the park last October.
When you finish feeding the animals, head over to the Sky area of the park and give in to your own wild side. This year’s Summer Season Opening Celebration will bring with it the unveiling of a brand new thrill at Six Flags Discovery Kingdom: Tony Hawk’s Big Spin, a steel roller coaster designed to let riders experience what it feels like to be Tony Hawk at his craziest.
All you maximum thrill seekers, be sure to check out the rest of Discovery Kingdom’s wild rides: the Boomerang Coast to Coaster, the Cobra, Hammerhead Shark, Kong, V2: Vertical Velocity, Roar and Medusa, the “tallest, fastest, longest and most advanced roller coaster in Northern California.”
Six Flags Discovery Kingdom also has plenty of rides that the whole family can enjoy together, like bumper cars and swings. Even the really little ones can get in on the fun in their very own kiddie section packed with rides that are more child-speed.
With animal adventures, marine mammal interactions, thrill rides and family friendly fun, Six Flags Discovery Kingdom really is a destination for the entire family. So get the whole bunch together. The summer season starts May 23.
